The Shames's new roady/percussionist is Michael Ayres. It turns out that he is also a musician so The Muggy Flooz may make that come back yet! Michael plays congas, timbales and tambourine

Jimmy P.(The one-and-only J.C.Hooke) just got back from spending the week with Tom Doody (Toad) on The Left Coast.

We're still waiting for that interview from Jeff Rutter in the Shames's on-line chatroom (which will be a blast-there is never a dull moment with Jeff around). Also, we are trying to con...we mean talk Ron Brandt into booking an interview with the chatroom between his adventures.

Tim Rutter, The Shames's man-of-few-words bass player checked in with the homepage over the holidays...we still remember our 2nd reunion with the Shames at their 1997 Clarendon Hills concert. The New Colony Six was on stage when the sky suddenly turned dark. Well, nature let loose and everyone scattered , with The Colony making a quick exit from the stage. We made a beeline to Sue Patterson's car, draging our blanket behind us. Toad was standing under the over-hand of a nearby building while Tim Rutter sought refuge under a large tree with bass guitar in hand. Seeing it's potential as a lightning rod, Tim decided against any immediate stage appearances. The storm was fortunately short-lived, and the Shames went on to perform one of their best shows.

Here's a concert update from Marlene O'Malley our roving reporter in the Chicago area:
Just got back from the April 16th, 2000 Shames/Ides show at the Corral in Western Springs....another wonderful show. It was all acoustic...no drums (altho Jimmy was on his congas, etc.)....it sounded terrific. Rocky got a chance to be up front with the rest of the band for a change, and he looked at home there as he is behind his drums.
Their harmonies were perfect as usual, and they had everyone singing along to the oldies. The little ones that the show benefited seemed to enjoy it as well. A lot of them were up dancing to the music (so were Jeff & Paul!). Jimmy and Larry joined the Ides of March on stage for their final number "Vehicle".
The kids presented the Shames & the Ides with posters thanking them for their appearance, and the benefit raised a lot of money for a good cause. I even got a Brian Wilson autographed copy of "Pet Sounds" for my collection from the silent auction! A nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

August 4th and 5th, 2000 Concert Updates:
Shames fans who may have been disappointed by Tom Doody's absence in LaGrange were certainly not disappointed with the band's fantastic performance. Unfortunately for all, Tom was a victim of the United Airlines flight delays that have been making news headlines since last week. It wasn't until just a few hours before show time that Tom phoned in from L.A. to say he was most likely going to be too late to make the gig.
After a couple brief moments of panic had subsided, Larry Coveny who sings Tom's parts when Tom cannot be on stage with the band, was kind enough to defer his scheduled vacation for a day and not only rescued the band but did an inspired performance for the responsive audience who attended the LaGrange concert. THANKS LARRY!! It was also a special night because Jeff Rutter sat in on guitar and treated everyone to the virtuoso playing and slapstick fun only Jeff can provide every time he takes he stage. Tom was missed, but Larry, Jeff and the rest of the band gave the crowd what they expected. Another great Cryan' Shames live performance!

The following night was Northbrook Fest. After driving all the way to San Diego to catch a flight, Tom had finally made it into Chicago and was extra eager to vent from the frustrating past 24 hours by letting it all hang out on stage. So those who were lucky enough to catch our favorite '60s band last Saturday in Northbrook saw and heard the band with it's most authentic and vintage voices performing to a very appreciative audience.
As usual, Tom deviated from the normal set and this is when the band is at it's best. When they can ad lib ... take requests ... gab with the crowd ... jam on an unknown song just for the challenge and make it sound like it was a rehearsed tune in the repertoire. The fans know this is what sets the Shames apart from other bands. Their spontaneity, talent, and passion to perform. This could last for a long time!

We just recieved some great photos by Jules and Kent Follett from the August 4th,2000 LaGrange concert.Click Here

Update of Carol Stream Fest( June 23, 2000) From Marlene O'Malley..our roving reporter in the Chicago area.

A little review.....just got back from Carol Stream Fest, muddy shoes and all. The Shames played starting at around 7:30. As they got into their set, the clouds really started rolling in thick, and the lightning was getting closer. They had done about 4 songs when the wind really started gusting, and the fest organizers closed down the main stage til the storm blew over for safety reasons. We retreated to our cars and vans, hoping it would be a short rain & they could continue the show. But when it kept raining for some time, it looked like it would be a washout. The crowd that stayed had ventured into the beer tent, so the Shames decided to do an acoustic set there, rather than chance the main stage again and the weather. This is where their professionalism and talent really comes out, when they make do with what they have and still entertain their fans. They sounded so good in that tent, it was almost as though it was planned that way. From "The Star Spangled Banner" (which they sang at Wrigley Field last week) to all the old favorites, they had just their own harmonies and Paul's guitar, and they really mesmerized the crowd. The audience was so appreciative that the Shames had stayed and given them a great performance, and so were the fest organizers, Marcy & Steve. Once again, we all know who the best group in Chicago is.....the Shames came through again, and I think they may have made some new fans out there. And deservedly so! The Buckinghams also did an acoustic set for the fest.
See ya, Marlene
