Update Feb.9th, 2002!......

The Cryan' Shames
Chicago’s local heroes, the Cryan’ Shames topped the Midwest charts on a regular basis from 1966-1969 with their harmony-fueled pop confections. From their straight-outta-the-garage debut, Sugar & Spice (which stars the indelible hit of the same name) to the more mature psychedelic orchestrations and innovations of A Scratch In The Sky and Synthesis, these CDs — graced with bonus tracks a-plenty — contain some of the most memorable pop-rock of the ‘60s! .

And a thank you from Victoria Guillory:

"..To everyone who supported the night at the Hard Rock Cafe ...I 've spent a long time trying to think of what to say to you all.....first of all thank you to everyone who made it happen...and you already know who they are !!! but especially to Jim Pilster for sharing his evening with Isaac....I know that Isaac will have been there with you all and being as humble as he was, ( in public!!) ) he will have been wondering what all the fuss was about !!
I have had literally hundreds of e-mails from people who loved my husband and that was strange at first but now it makes me feel good and most of all proud !! Our children Ellie and Jacob were only ages 6 and 2 when they lost their Daddy and although we tallk about him all the time....I've kept lots of things which they can look at when they're older and appreciate what he was to other people and what a special person he was ....not just a fantastic Daddy !!!!
One person who I communicated with alot was Marlene and I didn't even know she existed til after Isaac died...!! it seems he had an " e-mail life " which I was not party to, due to my own technophobia which was quickly overcome in January 2001 when I realised that in order to keep his CDs available to people I had to touch the dreaded computer !!! being in touch with people from his past is very comforting because although he knew I would not be alone..... I wonder if he expected me to make new friends....from old !! which I have !! he knows of course.............his love comes from all quarters.
I feel so lucky that he made so many good friends during his life and that he made such an impression on people ......of course he made quite an impression on me when I was only 17yrs old when I first saw him and heard him play at a local folk club !!!! We had to wait 10 yrs to get together and then had 13 years which were only too short !! Isaac was very resiliant and even during his illness he was characterisically up-beat and brave..I know this sounds corny but he really was...we were together as a family for almost every day of the 9 months we had after his diagnosis and he died with us, in our house as he wanted to.
Anyway.......I just want you all to know that we thank you all and appreciate your remembering Isaac on such a special night.
    With love,"
Victoria , Eleanor and Jacob Guillory

And A New Years Greeting From Jim Pilster
To all our friends, new and old, and in memory of friends and compatriots that we've lost in the last year....the boys in the band toast you with a heartfelt 'THANK YOU'! We love you guy's and wish you all the very best in the New Year! We hope to see you all in person in 2002! jimmy

The New Year arrives at Navy Pier in Chicago.

Chicago Stories ?When Chicago Rocked the 60s?
    Mon. Nov. 19 from 7:30-8 p.m.
In the mid-1960s, the British invasion led by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones changed America?s tastes in popular music. Tonight, the story of how several Chicago rock and roll bands fought off the British and had their own national hits. Written and produced by Chicago radio and television personality Bob Sirott, featuring original recordings of groups such as the Buckinghams, Chicago and the Cryan? Shames.
    ***UPDATE REVIEW!***

This was really well done. Bob Sirott really excelled with this Chicago Stories Special by capturing the spirit of the Chicago 1960's scene. Watching it was like turning back the clock and returning there. It featured interviews with our own Marlene O'Malley, The Cryan' Shames Home Page's Chicago area roving reporter, and a Jimmy Pilster in-depth interview with a video of The Cryan' Shames today. Barb's comment was "Dang Hooke, ya sure looked good dude. The entire show was a hoot".

WHERE ON EARTH IS TOM DOODY?

Well, we had a recent Toad sighting on "The Left Coast" in the form of an entry in The Cryan' Shames Guestbook. Tom is alive and well, and we look forward to seeing him on stage February 21st, 2002 at the Isaac Guillory Benefit!

    RON"S CUSTOM GUITAR UPDATE

Well, Ron's new Custom Guitar page Click Here has been launched which includes some awesome pics of his new axe being built from the ground up.

    SCRAMBLE UPDATE
    New Scramble Playdates!
You don't have to hibernate until the next Cryan' Shames Summer Concert season. Relief for the winter blues is on the way with The Cryan' Shames' rhythm section which is made up of working musicians who play in and around Chicago, IL. with various other musical endeavors. Among their musical pursuits is the fun loving club-band called Scramble. Scramble consists of any 3 or more members from an exclusive stable of musicians who accommodate the following criteria and qualiffications:
-Must have a sense of humor
    -Must play loud
-Must be able to leave the wife at home
    -Must double on Bass
Although there have been instances when non-qualified people have sat in with Scramble, the list of regulars includes: Paul Wood, Jeff and Tim Rutter, Rocky Penn, Ron Brandt (#1- see explanation below), Dave Rice, and Greg Brucker. Occasional guests include: Any chick singer, any Elvis impersonator, any Cryan' Shames family member, any horn player...just about anyone can sit in with scramble. When Jim Pilster (J.C. Hooke) attends a Scramble gig, the guys play to Jim's added percussion and often perform a lot more Cryan' Shames material. If you're a classic rock fan, or just want to hear some raw jams played at earsplitting volumes..you don't want to miss SCRAMBLE!.
    Scramble's next playdates are:

  • Wednesday, November 21, 2001 (The day before Thanksgiving!) - Warrenville,IL.
Scramble appears at The Avalanche in Warrenville on Route 59 about 1 mile north of Butterfield Road (Route 56) next to the Dairy Queen.

  • Friday, November 23, 2001 - Warrenville,IL.
Scramble appears at Hotshots in Warrenville. Hotshots is located on the corner of Route 59 and Batavia Road in the same strip mall as the McDonalds and Subway.

    RON BRANDT.COM..........
You can now reach The Fishin' Musician at his NEW !!! Address http://www.ronbrandt.com

Ron's site features stories and pictures from his many adventures, recipes, music, along with a lot of fun and humor.

    RON BRANDT.COM - PART 2

It has been recently discovered that a second Ron Brandt exists that is also a musician!. Ron Brandt #2 lives in New Jersey, and has his own band. His web site URL is also similar to our Ron Brandt's(#1), except his URL is www.ronniebrandt.com
Well, Ron #2 has had some of Ron #1's fans show up at his concerts and ask him fishing questions - which he knows nothing about!. To further complicate this, their e-mail addresses are similar, and they both play guitar.
Sooooo, If you are ever in doubt on which Ron Brandt you are seeing, look for the Custom Axe with the exotic fish inlays on the Guitar neck and fretboard, and you will have found our one and only Fishin' Musician (Ron #1). Ron #2 is sending us his CD "Rudy's Thread" (which precedes his next CD "Dig A Little Deeper"), and it would be a Cryan' Shame to not feature a review of it in this newsletter after forwarding it to Ron #1. We hope this clears everything up.

    "PLEASE STAY"

To clear up another matter, a second "Cryin Shames" exists which plays 50's and 60's music, and they are the ones which recorded the single "Please Stay". They are in England instead of our Chicago area. Soooo, as long as Ron Brandt #2 in N.J. doesn't join them, everything should be straightened out now.

    PASSING THE "BUCK"

A fan recently inquired if Tom Scheckel is still a member of The Cryan' Shames.Well, Tommy - who is a member of The Buckinghams and an awesome drummer, is a friend of Ron Brandt #1. Ron wrote to the fan and cleared up this matter. We haven't heard if Tommy Scheckel knows Ron Brandt #2.

    STONEHENGE REVISITED

Gerry Stone's son Colin and daughter Jessica have contacted us and we hope to be featuring an update on Gerry soon! Gerry will be at the February 21st, 2002 Isaac Benefit!

OUR THANKS TO THE CRYAN' SHAMES

The Home Page Staff got to attend a great Block Party / Cook Out at Jim Pilster's House after their Pop Corn Fest Concert in Valparaiso, Indiana, which was also a benefit for a neighbor. Barb Malott was the first to observe that after 35-Just-For-The-Fun-Of-It-Years, The Cryan' Shames were once again a garage band, as they were playing out of a garage due to the occasional rain that we were experiencing. When this was brought to Jimmy's attention, he commented "Wow, and I thought we had made progress after all these years".
Anyway, The Cryan' Shames put on great partys, and this one was every bit as good as Larry Coveny's earlier this year. The Danzman, Jules and Kent Follet, and Dave and Sandy Zane from Zane's Way were among the numbers of the party attendees. Jimmy has a great friendly neighborhood where even the neighborhood pets are friends and visit each other. Jimmy's cat "Dot-Com" entertained the feline friends, while his dog "Bomber" mingled among the guests.
