2002 Year End State of the Group Message

Well, 2002 has past us by, in what seemed like a flash! The shows were plentiful as well as the crowds. Especially you 'Shameless Girls, and Shame-etts' (you know who you are), and that whole crazy front row's group that came to almost every single gig (freezing your butts off in Glen Ellen or sitting in the hot sun on an afternoon in Hillside), you brought gifts, taped each song, took pictures, sang along, and in general made us feel much more special than we ever could be. To you and every one of the fans that were at the shows or emailed us that they couldn't be there but wanted to be……… a GREAT BIG THANK YOU! And a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2002 is gone now lets get to 2003.

As most of you know by now Larry Coveny, our lead singer, has had to leave us (no, thank God he didn't die) but he will be missed.

For some of you that don't know the complete history of the Shames, this group has always been in a constant state of change. Before the first album hit the streets the late Dave Purple had already left to explore his real love, being behind the board in a recording studio. From that point forward the group members came and went with every album. If you notice, Tom Doody and I were the only original members on all the records, and for that matter, every incarnation of the band. Through all the personnel changes, though, one thing remained; the Cryan' Shames spirit of having fun and being entertaining.

Dennis Conroy wrote me a note about the joy he felt in seeing the Shames at the Symphony Center show; the first time he'd seen us in many years. In his letter he reminded me of some things I often forget while doing the day to day work of booking, advancing and managing the band so that I can do what I really love, getting up there and entertaining. He reminded me of the Shames spirit and how we have kept it alive all these years. It's unique. I don't say that to slam any other group, but it is unique. He said something like,' the spirit of the band was greater than any of the individual parts, that the spirit of the band was there to make people happy and forget about their problems for that two hours and take them back to the times that those problems didn't even exist'. Thank you Denny for that reminder because the next year will be a year of change, but I assure you We Are Gonna Have Fun! It will be tough to fill the shoes of the players that have left. All I can say to these musicians is thank you, you all were the best at what you did and will always be missed . But in this band change has always meant new energy, new ideas and another opportunity to get out there and cause some serious fun………. soooo, on with the show!

First, under the category of "worst kept secrets", it looks like the one and only Bob Stroud will be taking over the lead singing position. You all know him; he has been on almost every radio station in Chicago. With his "Root Salute" show and uncanny knowledge of rock & roll history. He is now on WDRV (97.1) almost every day. He brings a wonderful voice and great stage presence; this should be very cool!

Bob Stroud
Second; Jeff Rutter will be rejoining the group with his outstanding voice and guitar work and that wackiness that has been missed since he left a few years ago.

Then, Gregg Brucker; you diehard Shames/Scramble fans know him from the latest Scramble gigs, will be sitting in on Bass and lending his smooth voice to the harmonies.

Dave Rice whom you all know from Scramble will be playing his fabulous keyboards and singing a bunch of new tunes.
Of course there will be the infamous Rocky Penn on drums and vocals!

In the true tradition of the Shames / Scramble scenario there will be a revolving group of player's including, but not limited to, Larry Samples on vocals, Bob Blum and/or John Melnik on keys, Dave Zane on guitar and who knows, maybe even some of the past players will grace us with their presence. They are always welcome! To that end, I have asked Tom Doody if he could come back and do a few shows…..we'll just have to wait and see.

First show has been planned for January 31 at one of our favorite roadhouse clubs, Rory's Music Café in Addison. At the very least, it should be interesting. We hope to see you all there.

From all of us to all of you, have a happy and loving New Year,
Jim Pilster and the Cryan' Shames

A Farewell To Larry

As everyone has heard by now, Larry Coveny, our one and only Silver One, has retired from the Cryan' Shames. Marlene O'Malley (our Chicago Area Rovin' Reporter) did a nice tribute for him along with her 60's Museum / Cellar Reunion review Here.

A Blast From The Past
Chad Purple (Dave's son) recently sent us an update bio on Dave which is now posted on his Memorial Page.

Tim Rutter, The quiet half of the Shames' Rutter-Brothers, injured his hand in an accident which required surgery. Last we heard Tim was recovering, though he wont be playing while he recovers. Tim was at the October 6th Chicago Gold Show, and in great spirts, which shows that you can't keep a good man down. Our prayers to Tim for a speedy recovery. Dennis Conroy was also at the Chicago Gold Show, and joined the Shames for an autograph session with the fans after the concert.

Barb and Pat's son Shaun got married on September 21st, 2002 and this special night was made even more special with Jim & Lorie Pilster, G.L.O.R.I.A. & Al Knuth, Marlene O'Malley, Sue & Bill Patterson, and Alan Dawson attending the wedding and reception. Everyone danced, of course, when the D.J. played "Sugar and Spice" at the reception.

JUST ANOTHER HOOK ON THE WALL

Jim Pilster's hook can now be viewed by all in it's final resting place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago, IL. It was inducted into their "Wall of History" on February 21st , 2002's An Evening with Chicago's Gold Isaac Guillory Benefit Concert
Jimmy's hook was made at the former John Brown's in Piper's Alley, Old Town Chicago, and is a piece of art in itself.

CONCERT BRIEFS

Larry Coveny ("The Silver One") and Ron Brandt received a surprise pay raise at the Oak Forest Concert which we wont get into here. It is rumored that someone on The Shames Home Page Staff instigated this memorial event which interfered with Tim Rutter's lead vocal during their performance. Jeff (The 2nd half of The Rutter - Brothers) joined The Cryan' Shames at their Lemont Concert and really wow'ed them. Both concerts were captured on video by our very own Shameless Crew.

THE IDES OF MARCH
The Shames Home page staff caught their September 7th, 2002 concert at the Valparaiso, IN. Popcorn Fest, and really enjoyed their show. They recently sold out of Fan Memorabilia . Jim Peterik and Chuck Soumar told us about their. New Web Site. The Ides will be performing at The Chicago Gold Concert along with The Cryan' Shames and The Buckinghams

THE DEATH OF ALL THAT'S SACRED?

"The same hollow looks of disbelief seen in the eyes of the workers at GM in the last century can now be seen in former 'Rock Stars' ",

"Music is sound organized for the purpose of expression...'a dream that can be heard' .Period."

"It's all good"

By James Fairs / CEO, BWP International / Bananawhale Productions

Throughout the last century, the thoughts had been deeply implanted...by events, by hope, and at least in part by a longing for an almost utopian form of stability. Thoughts like: "If you've got a job at GM, you've got a job for life"...or: "America has never lost a war"... and the list goes on.  And one by one, like spinning bowling pins, these axioms fell...only to be replaced by new ones. When the Soviet Union was disbanded into smaller nation groups, the new axiom was: "Nothing can stop us now"...which led to "Greed is good".  Few seemed to factor in the unattended needs of Nations and groups long ignored, or the determined pursuit of excellence that had come to define certain Nations in the Asian basin, and elsewhere.

But in one prescient season, before being absorbed by the machine, Bruce Springsteen's CDs were a tour through hollowed villages with closed factories, where the axe of the new global realities had truly fallen.

We see the same process in the creative world.  The big band era gave way to rhythm and blues, and the emphasis shifted from the moving voices in the horn section .to the beat.  The musicians of that time could trace the evolution of their style from the music of the 1800's...and even farther into the past. This evolutionary process had been accelerated slightly by the Gutenburg press...

And now, with a lick from Chuck Berry, a shake from Elvis, and a wink from James Dean...it seemed to be all over.

The Blues has a set of changes all its own, and the training grounds have been scattered across the globe in clubs and lofts...a sacred passage, of sorts, to be made by all those with the nerve to make a claim of being "real". And for most other genres as well, there was just no shortcut.

Until the music video. "Video Killed The Radio Star" was, in fact, taken from the Variety magazine article which spoke of " 'talkies' killing the silent film star". Whole careers began and ended with a few videos, and perhaps a few CDs. The proliferation of technologies had geometrically accelerated the pace of artistic and cultural evolution.

And now, we see it again. The very notion of "chord changes" as a foundation for a "song" has been replaced by the Rap/Hip-Hop Nation. The change was natural; sound fragments and samples marked new areas of thought as clearly as "bridges" and "chord changes". The same hollow looks of disbelief seen in the eyes of the workers at GM in the last century can now be seen in former 'Rock Stars", who knew...well...chord changes.

It's time for some clear thinking:

1) It's all good.

2) Change is inevitable. The oldest stories tell of a Persian King who was tired of writing new speeches for each occasion. He summoned three wise men to write an all-purpose speech, and they came up with "These things, too, shall pass away".

3) The World Order, however distasteful, is a more realistic representation of the souls currently living in it than was the distorted version which emerged after World War Two...which found the rest of the world devastated or in chaos, and the U.S.A. untouched and tooled up, by virtue of geography.

4) Music is sound organized for the purpose of expression. Period.

...or, as a song from the Big Band era put it, so succinctly..."A Dream That Can Be Heard"

5) Expression doesn't die...at least not easily; it often lasts longer than the culture which fueled it, or resulted from it, to be discovered and rediscovered time after time.

6) "He not busy being born is busy dying"*

peace out:
