Our Summer 2003 Cryan' Shames News Letter has been off to a slow start, but the breaking news is finally rolling in. Diane Raddatz has joined the Cryan' Shames homepage staff with the Message Board, News Dept., and Shames B-Days. In keeping with our standing policy, we will continue to allow the traditional 10% fiction with the news... seriously, Di has promised to keep everyone accurately informed.

Old Town Revisited

In 1999 we revisited Old Town, Chicago. Pipers Alley is now a movie theater and a bridal shop. The open air alley was now enclosed, with the stores on ground level vacant except for a fast food restaurant that faces North Ave. The stone floor had been replaced with linolium tile, and there is now an escalator for the upper levels. Only the chandelier that announced the entrance to Piper's Alley remained.
Old Town was one of Chicago's major entertainment spots in the 1960's, and its stores included : The Man At Ease, A Ripley's Believe it or not Museum, A Wax Museum , The Pickle Barrel, The Crystal Pistol , Second City Theater, John Brown's, The Sweet Tooth (cover of Sugar & Spice Album), along with many other unique shops , eating places and cabarets . Sadly the hippie were gone, and the new aged stores had moved further north on Belmont to a building that is coincidentally called "The Alley".
"The Old Ways are gone, and I wondered why...". The only remedy for the inevitable changing of the guards that occurs with each new decade in our lives is to take your place among the troops in your new "Nick of Time". You must not linger too long with your backward glance while doing so, or you will succumb to the Sirens call. After all, the New Ways will one day become someone's Old Ways. A younger generation in the "Here and Now" showed us this at The Alley on Belmont, which is certain to become "The Old Ways" fo many youths 30 years from now. Our son and friends with their blue hair and Gothic clothing fit it with the young crowd at The Alley....we did not. Instead of proving once again that "You cant go home anymore", we found where "Home" had moved to. It was, after all, the same new aged theme regenerated in a slightly different form, and viewed through younger eyes.

Shaun & Robin's Wedding

As mentioned earlier Pat & Barb's son Shaun got married on September 21, 2002. Among the honored guest were Jim & Lori Pilster, Alan Dawson & date Linda, Sue & Bill Patterson, G.L.O.R.I.A. & Al Knuth and Marlene O'Malley. The D.J. played Sugar & Spice , and It Could Be We're in Love which added to the night's magic. Our special thanks to The Cryan' Shames for making this a special night.

JUST ANOTHER HOOK ON THE WALL

Jim Pilster's hook can now be viewed by all in it's final resting place at the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago, IL. It was inducted into their "Wall of History" on February 21st , 2002's An Evening with Chicago's Gold Isaac Guillory Benefit Concert
Jimmy's hook was made at the former John Brown's in Piper's Alley, Old Town Chicago, and is a piece of art in itself.

SHAMES NEWS FROM MARLENE

The Suburban Chicago Papers (The Sun) interviewed Jim Pilster in June 2003 for a story on The Cryan' Shames called "Cryan' out loud". The story can be seen on suburbanchicagonews.com

June 15, 2003 South Bend, IN. Cryan' Shames Concert
By Diane Raddatz

Those of us that made the trek out to South Bend on Father's Day may have found it worth the trip. Even more so than Dunkin' Donuts.
The bluehaired girls in the front row put on a show of their own, much to the apparent surprise of the Cryan' Shames! Mess with us, will ya? After Jimmy's comment about the front row in the Joliet Sun the week before, Marlene had a great idea. And Karen, God bless her pea picking little heart, actually did the running around required to make it happen. When the boys pranced out on stage, we were all wearing our silver-blue mullet wigs. Except Li'l; she sprayed hers! (Get that out, yet, Li'l?) , and every one of them was cracking up when they got a load of us! Then we put them back on when they sang "our song." Babs, Sue, Sharon & Lyn, you were the only missing links that would have made it perfect!
Everyone seemed to be in rare form, too! Bobby, you are obviously getting used to us bluehairs, loosening up quite a bit and having lots of fun. It shows in your singing.
The Stereo Daves are getting the feel of the whole thing, too. Throw in the other three (need I name names?) and you've got a show worth traipsing out to Carol Stream for!
Hopefully, the traffic coming home won't be quite as brutal!

The Summer Festival Season is just begining for The Cryan' Shames with many concerts already slated for the summer season. Marlene O'Malley, our Chicago Area Rovin' Reporter, who has also been staff for The 60's Museum concert events, announced that their concert was a sell out, and a 100% success. Larry Coveny "The Silver One" will be singing lead at the July 4th Bensonville concert.

The 60's Museum

All profits go to the Museum to further the preservation and display of everything related to that decade, from the Space Race, Vietnam, Civil Rights and Cold War to changes in music, art and lifestyles.
